The Newest NFL Coaches

Brendan
Well, it is official, the Giants hired Tom Coughlin to a 4-year, $12 million deal. He promises to bring back smashmouth football. However, I hope he doesn't forget that we have Amani Toomer and Jeremy Shockey, two very good passing targets. Also, this team needs some personnel changes to really be successful doing so.
I don't know how I feel about this, but part of me was hoping for Romeo Crennel, the defensive coordinator for the Pats, who has worked very closely with the best coach in football, Bill Belichek. I always thought the problems were defensive play and the o-line. However, Coughlin is also a defensive mind and is proven. Unfortunately, he has also proven that he can get the players to hate him after a few years.
But the news of the day that blows my mind is that the Redskins hired JOE GIBBS. Yes, the same coach who led them to a Super Bowl in '91, but soon after retired to own race cars and appear in motor oil commercials. Couple that with Bill Parcells in Dallas and suddenly the NFC East seems to be getting very nostalgic.

I agree completely with the Joe Gibbs thing. That came out of NOWHERE. However, it is a spectactular move on Dan Snyder's part. Gibbs is a proven winner and will do well. The Skins' fans can finally believe that Snyder is not going to ruin that franchise and that all the suckiness that has surrounded that team since Snyder arrived is finally gone.

As for Coughlin, I don't think I'm as negative as everybody else is. I'm hoping that his tour around the NFL has made him less of a taskmaster as coach. Just enough, however to prevent the players from rebelling. I otherwise want hom to be the hardass this team so desperately needs.

How interesting did the NFC East just get? I liked the Giants chances until I realized that at least one and probably two teams from the division will not make the playoffs.

Oh, and as for the smashmouth stuff, I think the Giants only problem is line play on both sides (with secondary concerns for LBs and kicker). Hopefully Coughlin and Accorsi will address that with a free agent Right Tackle. I doubt that Collins, Toomer, Hilliard, Shockey and Tyree/Carter will be forgotten. Remember he was the guy that developed the Mark Brunell, Jimmy Smith and Pete Mitchell air attack - one of the most underrated in the 90s.
