anyways, i'm an idiot cause this is the first time i noticed this whole restricted forum thing.
i glanced at your posts but will read thru them tomorrow at work, or as i like to call it my own small corner of hell. it will be a much appreciated time filler. i got the general idea from them though and may have a good tale to toss back as well about job insanity. on my end, for the past 4 months i sit there everyday couting down the days till july 11th, the day i plan on quiting. more details tomorrow. viva la real world.
Well, the good news keeps rolling in. The head Country guy for Cumulus comes in on Monday. This is an infrequent occurance. The last time he was here, I began his trip with a morning show and ended it as a board-op for a syndicated show. Good Times.
I expect changes are on their way. With any luck, I'll get laid off. I can't tell you how awesome it would be to get a few weeks' severence and ride the unemployment pony for awhile. I'm not optimistic, however. It will probably be something much, much lamer than that.
By the way, feel free to post work sucks stories here. That's what I'm using it for.
i'll just run through the crux of the insanity at my place. so its the 10 hour day that seems to be borderline normal for tech places, though most seem to hold at 9 this place and my last job love the 10 hour way (8 to 6).
anyways, unlike my last job, this place has a thing about lunch. they buy you free lunch you order off a menu system. ok, nice perk right. oh wait though, and they don't tell you this till after your hired. you're not allowed to leave at lunch. so your at your desk all ten hours of the day.
and to make this even more nutso. the people here all drink the koolaid. this makes things worse as theres no comraderie about the insanity of sitting at ones desk for 10 hours. instead of say a 9 hour day, or even the 10 but i can leave. which would likely leave me content and doing productive work say 7 to 8 hours a day...instead they get a truly bitter employee who gives them an hour or two of meaningful work a day.
following the koolaid theme. i'm in a new employee meeting about 3 weeks into the job. a lady raises her hand and asks the human resources person if the company has any sort of day care program for young kids. reasonable question in my opinion. instead of just saying no though, the HR person honestly goes, "No, but we give you free lunch". apparently in this crazy world, free lunch is worth roughly 3 tons of gold.
i'll wrap with the latest crush to my morale. after a month at the place (i started last april) i learned you may leave the office if and only if you go to a nearby gym. its not quite sanctioned but people do it. i immediately jumped onbaord despite loathing most forms of excercise activity. anyways, i'm told when i ask about this, that watch out people may look down at you. i'm tihnking why don't they just go to, why be stupid, nah, they can't be that dumb. so low and behold a few months later i find out people indeed are commenting on me leaving for an hour 3 days a week.
this brings us to a week ago, when my boss, whose a decent guy, but terrible manager gives me my year end review. in it, he highlties work i did, and my one negative is that too many people complained to him about me going to the gym. so now i must work an hour later or come in earlier if i want to go. i truly work with the most asmmonkey breed of people going.
my one bright spot is after about a month here i decided i needed out and started plotting for a return to school. the crap of the day is good motivation for all things application related. why getting into grad school is a batltle is another rant i won't bore everyone with here now (but real quick, its essentially voluntary school i will pay for, outside of say the MIT's of the world, why does UNC charlotte fight me trying to get in?).
anyways, july 11th is my hopeful 2 weeks notice day, then i enjoy august and start school if all goes well. if not, watch the news, i may just lose it that day ; )
there is something quite relieving about ranting this here, i hope some of it is entertainment for others. for the majority of you who probably don't know me, i am a programmer at a financial company. i highly recommend avoiding finance places, they seem none too cool about how they treat employees, at least on the tech side.
